About NannoWare/BugCam
  • NannoWare is a collection of images and descriptions of Cenozoic nannofossils compiled by the Florida State University Nannofossil Laboratory under the direction of Dr. S.W. “Woody” Wise.


  • BugCam is the software that displays the images and descriptions, created by Mitch Covington of BugWare, Inc.  BugCam can be adapted to handle other fossil groups.

Explanatory Notes and Acknowledgments:
  • The NannoWare©/BugCam© package is an interactive, icon-driven digital image catalog of over 600 Cenozoic calcareous-nannofossil taxa.  It is distributed by the International Nannoplankton Association (INA) as part of their CD-ROM Series No. l, which is entitled “Electronic Calcareous Nannofossils”.   The package consists of:


  • The NannoWare Database version 1.0 authored by Sherwood W. Wise, Jr, Laurel M. Bybell, Mitch Covington, Eric de Kaenel, Bryan C. Ladner, Patricia Marino, Kristeen L. McGonigal, Darren D. Millman, Jay P. Muza, James J. Pospichal, Jean Self-Trail, Katharina von Salis, Giuliana Villa, and Wuchang Wei.  They were ably assisted by Jinfen Li and Floranda Thomas.


  • We hope that you, the user, will find this product useful for your work, and we invite your feedback on the utility of the package and the accuracy and quality of the database, which we continually seek to update and improve.  Please send your comments and suggestions for improvement to the first author, Sherwood W.   • The NannoWare/BugCam package is designed for the investigator working at the light microscope with limited literature resources.  The taxonomy is accordingly simplified to account for features that can be readily identified using light rather than electron optics, which means that some genera distinguished best by ultrastructural characteristics have been “lumped” together.  Hence genera such as Ericsonia will be found within Coccolithus, Sullivania within Chiasmolithus, Dictococcites within Reticulofenestra, etc.  Where this is done the alternate taxonomy is indicated in brackets.


  • NannoWare/BugCam grew out of a forerunner called NannoNotes©, that was commissioned by the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) for use aboard their scientific drillship, the D/V JOIDES Resolution.  This package consisted of a database authored by Wise et al. (1995) and a software program written for the Win­dows 3.0 operating environment by Dr. Linda Tway of Sapphire Pacific, Inc.  The authors of the NannoNotes database were Sherwood W. Wise, Jr, Darren D. Millman, William C. Payton, James J. Pospichal, Jay P. Muza, Patricia Marino, Andrea Concheryo, Giuliana Villa, Katharina Perch-Nielsen, Laurel M. Bybell, Jean Self-Trial, William Murphy, William R. Riedel, and Yan Xu.


  • In addition to the initial grant from ODP, this project has been made possible through the generous support of the following industry sponsors:  AGIP Petroleum Co.   • Just left-click on the border with the mouse, holding the button down while you drag the border to the desired size.

  • The upper-left panel contains icons for the families or groups.


  • When you move the mouse into this panel, it automatically expands to full size.


  • Click on one of the icons, and all of the genera included in that group appear in the panel below…

  • In this example, the user clicked the icon for “Coccoliths, plain round”.



  • Below, all of the genera included in that group appeared.

"To view the species within..."
  • To view the species within the selected genus, double-click the icon for that genus.


  • A description and picture for the genus appear.


  • All of the species included in that genus also appear.

  • In this example, Amaurolithus tricorniculatus was clicked with the left mouse button.


  • The composite picture and the description of the species appear in the panels to the right.


  • The picture of the type specimen is denoted with an asterisk (*).  Original photographs are used when possible, in addition to supplemental photos and sketches.

"To compare a different species"
  • To compare a different species, right click that species.


  • The other species will appear in the far right panels for easy comparison.

  • Just above the species composite picture is a drop down list of similar species.


  • Pop down the list and select another species that you would like to view.


  • The similar species will appear in the panel opposite the one being currently displayed.

"Near the top of the..."
  • Near the top of the screen, there is a drop down list box titled “Find by species”.


  • If you already know the name of the species that you want to view, then pop down the box and scroll through the alphabetical list.


  • You can speed this search by typing in the first letters of the species.  The list will automatically advance to the closest match.


  • When the desired species is highlighted, just click it with the mouse or hit the Enter key on the keyboard.

  • You can also search for a species from the “Find by Genus” pop down box.


  • It works just like the species list described above.
